A naturally occurring substance that acts as an antioxidant, an immune system booster, and a detoxifier, Glutathione helps your body repair damage caused by stress, pollution, radiation, infection, drugs, poor diet, aging, injury, trauma, and burns. Glutathione is found in all cells in the body, as well as in the bile, the epithelial lining fluid of the lungs, and in the blood in smaller concentrations. Glutathione is also found in plants and animals.
It is a peptide made up of three amino acids: Glutamic acid, Cysteine and Glycine. Glutathione is an important water-soluble antioxidant that plays a role in supporting muscles to prevent free radical damage.
It is found in the largest concentrations in the liver where it acts as a powerful antioxidant and detoxifies the harmful compounds in the liver. It is then excreted through the bile.
The liver also excretes glutathione directly into the bloodstream where it is used to help maintain the integrity of red blood cells, as well as protecting white blood cells.
Glutathione is also found in the lungs and intestinal tract where it assists in carbohydrate metabolism and breaking down oxidized fats.
It is also used to prevent oxidative stress in most cells and helps to trap free radicals that can damage DNA and RNA. GSH also plays major roles in drug metabolism, calcium metabolism, the gamma-glutamyl cycle, blood platelet and membrane functions.
A deficiency of gluthione is first noticed in the nervous system with a lack of co-ordination, tremors, mental disorders, and body balance, all caused by lesions in the brain.
